CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!

   For the first time since 1996 the Winter Warriors are the Lakeland East Conference champions. It’s an amazing accomplishment, but the conference title is just one of several goals the Warriors have for this season – they’re on the cusp of something bigger and their eyes are set on even more prizes.
   Winter entered last week in a three-way tie with Birchwood and Auburn for first place in the East Lakeland. The Warriors wrested the conference crown away from the Bobcats and Trojans with a bludgeoning of Prairie Farm and Lake Holcombe on Tuesday and Friday.

  Watching Winter High’s Albert Blair play basketball is quite the spectacle, or perhaps bespectacled is the proper term, given that the 6’1” point guard prefers playing with glasses rather than contact lenses. At times he almost seems to resemble Harry Potter, the eponymous hero of the worldwide bestselling series, and that’s another apt description as Blair is a wizard on the court.

   It's easy to spot Winter High's Gunnar Greuel on the basketball court. If you've never watched him play, he's a veritable Winter version of the Energizer Bunny. He's seemingly darting everywhere on the court, and his energy levels rarely, if ever, drop.

Pasanen Nets 1000 points

 If you were trying to create the perfect basketball player, you'd probably make someone that was tall, long and athletic. Well, Winter High senior Kate Pasanen isn't tall. Nor is she long. But she is very, very athletic, and has a game that's darn near perfect.
   "Her strongest asset . . . left handed, right handed dribbling, drive the lane, shoot the threes, do the lay-ups, fast breaks, she can do everything," says Kate's mother and coach Jennie Pasanen. "She's a complete player."

 It didn't take long for Hailey Coss to make her mark on the sport of basketball. Almost from the very first moment she donned a Winter Warriors uniform, the talented player was scoring points and making a difference on the court.

   There's many ways a basketball player can impact a game. Obviously, there's scoring because after all, you can't win games without scoring points. But any coach will tell you it's defense that wins championships, and some players do their best work on the defensive side of things.

Winter Picks Up Conference Victory

   If you haven't seen the Winter Warriors boys basketball team play live this season, you're missing out. Win or lose, the Warriors have been putting on a show game after game, and a year after averaging just north of 40 points a game, Winter is averaging almost double thanks to the run-and-gun style adopted by coaches Josh Hautamaki and Curtis DeCora.
